MCP connector for Claude
Market Map: your trade, your county, counted.
Market Map tells a small business owner how crowded their trade is where they work, whether it is growing, and what local employers pay, from inside Claude. Ask about roofers in Kalispell, dental offices in Denver or landscapers in one Austin ZIP, and the answer comes back in one plain line, with every figure from a named Census or Bureau of Labor Statistics file and the year it describes. Where the agencies did not publish a figure, Market Map says so instead of guessing.

What an answer looks like
These lines come straight from the tools, computed from the stored data when this page was built.
size_up_market: roofer, Kalispell, MT
1 roofing contractor for every 4,724 residents in Flathead County, versus 1 per 7,438 across Montana and 1 per 13,196 nationwide; the county counted 24 in 2023, down from 28 in 2022.
what_to_pay: dental assistant, Kalispell, MT
Dental Assistants in the West Montana nonmetropolitan area: median $21.85 an hour ($45,460 a year); the middle half earn $19.27 to $23.13 an hour. Montana median $22.44 an hour ($46,680 a year); US median $23.11 an hour ($48,070 a year).
The tools
size_up_market
Size up a local market
One trade in one county: businesses with employees (establishments, employees, payroll, average pay, size classes, change from the prior year), businesses without employees, population, housing units, median household income, and residents per business for the county, state and US, with a one-line read. A ZIP or city that spans counties uses the county holding the largest share and lists the others.
Inputs: trade (plain words or a NAICS code) and place (a ZIP, "Kalispell, MT" or "Flathead County, MT").
compare_markets
Compare markets
One trade across 2 to 10 places, ranked from least to most crowded by residents per business, with the business count and its change from the prior year, employees, population and median household income for each county, plus the read.
Inputs: trade and places (2 to 10 ZIPs, cities or counties with their states).
what_to_pay
What to pay
BLS wages for an occupation in the metropolitan or rural area that holds the county: hourly and annual pay at the 10th, 25th, median, 75th and 90th percentiles and employment, beside the state and national medians. Top-coded and unpublished figures are labeled as such.
Inputs: occupation (plain words or an SOC code) and place.
find_codes
Find codes
Plain words to 6-digit NAICS industry codes and SOC occupation codes with their official titles and how each was matched, from a built-in list of the trades owners actually say, the NAICS index and the SOC direct match titles. Give a code to see its title and, for a NAICS group, the industries under it.
Inputs: query (words or a code); kind: industry, occupation or both (default).
How to read the numbers
- Residents per business
- County residents on July 1, 2023 divided by the establishments in the trade that had paid employees in March 2023, with the same figure for the state and the US beside it. A higher number means fewer competitors for each resident. It counts competitors, not demand: a resort county or a commuter suburb can buy more or less than its residents suggest.
- Establishments
- An establishment is one business location. A company with three shops counts three times. County Business Patterns counts only locations with paid employees, and leaves out most government, railroads, crop and livestock farms and household employers.
- Businesses without employees
- Nonemployer Statistics counts businesses with no payroll, mostly owners working alone. Census publishes most counties at 4 or 5 digits of the industry code, not 6. When the published group is the same industry, Market Map says so; when it is a broader group, it names the group and says to read it as a ceiling.
- Noise and figures not published
- Census adds a small amount of noise to employee and payroll figures to protect individual businesses and flags how much: under 2 percent, 2 to under 5 percent, or 5 percent or more. Market Map passes the flag on with each figure. Some employee size classes and wages are not published at all; those are marked not published and never filled in.
- Which county
- Every figure is for a whole county. A ZIP or city that crosses county lines uses the county holding the largest share (of land area for a ZIP, of residents for a city or town) and lists the others with their shares.
- Wages
- BLS publishes wages for metropolitan areas and for groups of rural counties, so what_to_pay names the area it used. Wages are straight-time pay before overtime and benefits, including tips and commissions, and leave out the self-employed. BLS shows wages at or above $115.00 an hour ($239,200 a year) only as that top code.
Market Map gives public statistics for planning and comparison. It is not financial, legal or hiring advice.

Limits
- Each tool has a per-minute limit on each server instance (size_up_market and what_to_pay 60, compare_markets 30, find_codes 120), and the connector accepts 20,000 calls a day across all users. Over a limit, the tool says so and gives the time to try again.
- compare_markets takes 2 to 10 places. Places that land in the same county are shown once.
- The 50 states and the District of Columbia are covered. Puerto Rico and the island territories are not.
- County Business Patterns is kept at 2, 3, 4 and 6 digits of the industry code. A 5-digit code with one 6-digit industry under it is read as that industry; otherwise the tool lists the choices.
Troubleshooting
- “Add the state”
- Town and county names repeat across states. Write “Kalispell, MT”, “Kalispell Montana” or a ZIP.
- “matches several places”
- Some states have many towns or townships with the same name. The message lists them with their counties; give the county or a ZIP instead.
- “has no ZIP Code Tabulation Area”
- PO box and single-business ZIPs have no Census area. Use the town name.
- The trade matched the wrong code
- Every answer names the code it used and how it matched. Run find_codes with the same words to see the other choices, then pass the 6-digit code you want.
- “BLS did not publish”
- BLS leaves out an occupation in an area when too few jobs were sampled. The state and national medians are still shown.
